UPDATE: Group 1-winning jockey Ethan Brown remains in a stable condition in ICU after a shocking fall in the Australian Guineas at Flemington on Saturday.

Brown underwent surgery to stop bleeding from internal injuries at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

He remains in a critical but stable condition in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

On Sunday afternoon, the Victorian Jockeys’ Association said: “After overnight surgery at Royal Melbourne and a review by surgeons, Ethan Brown is due to return to theatre tomorrow to further evaluate the full extent of his abdominal injuries.”

“He remains in ICU in a stable condition, further updates will be provided tomorrow (Monday).”

LEGARTO STEALS DRAMATIC AUSTRALIAN GUINEAS

He first arrived in a stable condition but a spokesperson for the hospital confirmed he was in a critical condition as of Saturday night.

However on Sunday morning, Racing Victoria advised Brown “remains in a stable condition” in the intensive care unit.

The 23-year-old rising star fell after his mount Maximillius tangled with Holymanz as they passed the 300m mark in the $1m Group 1 on Saturday, causing Maximillius to roll on Brown.

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Mark Zahra, rider of Holymanz, was cleared to fulfil his remaining rides.

Zahra walked back to the jockeys’ room after being assessed on track.

The race was ultimately won by NZ-trained filly Legarto.

Stewards delayed the last two races by 40 minutes to wait for the second ambulance to arrive on-course.

Maximillius and Holymanz sustained minor abrasions but no other abnormalities.

Stewards heard from Zahra, Damien Oliver (Amenable) and Blake Shinn (Elliptical) on Saturday but reserved further inquiries until Brown could provide his recollection of the incident.

Zahra told stewards he felt there was a “neat run” between Maximillius and the rail but the gap closed as the three horses to his outside, Elliptical, Amenable and Brown’s mount shifted into each other.

“I thought I could get through and maybe shift Ethan a tiny bit,” Zahra told stewards.

“As I’ve gone to press (through the gap) Damien took a narrow gap outside him.

“At the time I thought I could get through and make room for myself but as it turns out, no.”

After watching the race replay in the stewards’ room, including overhead and side angles, Oliver said there “wasn’t much room for error”.

Shinn, who was initially unaware the fall occurred behind him, told stewards Elliptical “maybe” shifted half a horse width.

“There was some calling but I don’t know where it was coming from,” Shinn said.

“I wasn’t aware (Oliver inside him and) definitely not Zahra.”

Stewards will aim to resume the inquiry this week.

Brown, who grew up in Alice Springs, is having a breakout season and is seventh on the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership with 24 winners.

He’s ridden three Group 1 winners in the past 12 months, including the Turnbull Stakes on Smokin’ Romans and the Memsie Stakes on Snapdancer.
